How Long Does Dental Marketing Take to Work?

By Cory Roletto

Plan on six months to a year for a full return on your dental marketing. Google Ads usually brings in real calls by month two and should be dialed in by month three. SEO takes about six months to reach page one, and up to a year if you’re starting from nowhere or you’re in a competitive market.

I know that’s not what anybody wants to hear. If you started working with a marketing company a couple of months ago, or you’re shopping around for one, you want to know your investment is a good one. Here’s what’s happening under the hood, and how to tell your marketing is working before the money shows up.

Key takeaways

  • Full return: six months to a year. Marketing isn’t a faucet that starts pouring patients the day you start paying.
  • Google Ads: Google needs two to four weeks to learn who should see your ad. Real calls usually start in month two, and the campaign should be dialed in by month three.
  • SEO: About six months to reach page one with the right budget. Up to a year in a competitive market or from a standing start.
  • Patient type changes the clock. Hygiene patients call and book. Implant and full arch patients can add a three-month sales cycle on top of the marketing ramp.
  • Watch the pipeline, not production. If rankings, new patient opportunities, booked appointments, and show-ups are moving at months two and three, revenue will follow.

Why doesn’t dental marketing work right away?

A lot of people think marketing is like turning on a faucet, where patients come out as soon as you start paying. It doesn’t work that way.

Different channels run on different clocks, and the patients they reach have different buyer intent.

Channel What happens first When it produces What changes it
Google Ads Google spends 2 to 4 weeks figuring out who should see your ad Real calls around month 2, dialed in by month 3 Budget. More budget doesn’t speed up the clock, but it means more patients on the other side of it.

How long do Google Ads take to work for a dental practice?

With Google Ads, it takes Google two to four weeks just to figure out who should even see your ad. Real calls usually start coming in at month two. By month three, your campaign should be dialed in and producing.

The caveat is your ad budget has to be big enough to fill the pipeline. More budget doesn’t speed up the clock, but it does mean a lot more patients on the other side of it.

How long does dental SEO take?

SEO is a longer game. Page one is where almost all the clicks happen, and getting there takes about six months with the right budget. Plan on up to a year if you’re starting from nowhere or you’re in a competitive market.

Does the type of patient change the timeline?

Yes. Hygiene patients call and book. That’s about a 90 percent close rate, so you can see a return in the first few months.

Implants and full arch are a different animal. Those patients are shopping around. They’re lining up financing. They need a consult before surgery ever gets scheduled. That can be a three-month sales cycle on its own, stacked on top of the marketing ramp.

So your marketing can be working perfectly and still look slow if all you’re watching is this month’s production.

What happens if you quit at month three?

We had two offices running the exact same full arch program. Both were spending $10,000 a month, and side by side, their numbers were almost identical across the board.

One office got nervous and shut it down at three months. At that point, they were at about a 3x return. The other office stuck with it, and by six months, they were at 7x.

The only difference between those two offices is that one of them quit.

How do you know your marketing is working before the money shows up?

Watch the pipeline, not the production. At months two and three, ask:

  • Are your secondary searches, like teeth whitening and cleanings, starting to hit page one? The bigger money terms are right behind them.
  • Are new patient opportunities coming in?
  • Are appointments getting booked?
  • Are people showing up?

If those numbers are moving at month two and three, revenue will follow. If calls are coming in but appointments aren’t, the leak is usually at the front desk. What should you ask whoever runs your marketing?

Ask them if they integrate with your practice management software and can show you what your marketing is contributing to real patients on your schedule. Not clicks, not impressions. Patients.

That’s something we built at WEO Marketly, and for the offices using it, it changes the whole conversation. Instead of arguing about whether their marketing is working, we’re looking at the same numbers together and deciding where to grow next.
