How Dental Marketing Strategies Work in Portland

Dentistry is a different purchase in Sellwood than it is in Rockwood.

Portland’s dental market is getting more crowded while its patient pool is shrinking. Your marketing has to do more than get you found—it has to get you chosen.

To create a profitable marketing plan, pick the practice you’re running:

  • One Location, One Dentist

    Who you’re actually competing with:

The most crowded corner of Oregon dentistry.

Urban Oregon has 0.55 dentist patient-care FTE per 1,000 residents, compared with 0.31 in rural counties (Oregon Health Authority, 2024), and Oregon’s only dental school trains its 77-student classes here in Portland. Contrarily, corporate ownership remains relatively low, with just 13% of Oregon dentists were DSO-affiliated in 2024, below the 16.1% national rate. The crowd here is still mostly independents.

    The challenge

There are fewer patients to go around, and the dentists around you didn’t leave with them. Multnomah County counted 795,391 residents in July 2025, roughly 20,000 fewer than the 2020 census found. Growth here means taking share, and taking share means being the practice patients find and remember when they’re ready to choose.

Meanwhile, you’re the marketing department, fitting it in between procedures. If nobody is checking the budget, it drifts—and in a shrinking patient pool, wasted spend is hard to win back.

    The move
Sell the one thing Portland’s big dental systems cannot put on camera: a specific dentist the patient gets to choose. Willamette and Kaiser patients pick a plan before they pick a face. Everyone else is still choosing, and they’re choosing from what they find online.

    You can do so through:

    • Short videos in your own voice answering the questions patients type into Google and ask ChatGPT
    • A website and Google Business Profile anchored to your neighborhood, Sellwood or St. Johns or Montavilla, not to metro Portland
    • A review base built patient by patient; it gives new patients a reason to choose you when the practices nearby look similar

What should a solo practice actually spend on marketing?

  • One Location, Two or More Dentists

    Who you’re actually competing with:

Insurance companies with their own waiting rooms.

Willamette Dental Group covers more than 430,000 plan members and treats them with salaried dentists in nearly 50 offices across Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, including 21 here in Hillsboro. Also, Kaiser Permanente adds 20 dental offices across the Portland metro and Southwest Washington, its dental group caring for more than 260,000 patients.

Those patients already know where they’re going. They chose during open enrollment. Your marketing is competing for everyone who still has a choice.

    The challenge

The patients still shopping are a narrower pool, and a practice-level report wastes them. With two or three providers, each book fills at its own speed, but the month rolls up into one number that can look healthy while an associate’s schedule runs hollow.

You keep buying leads for the practice as a whole while what you actually need is to get the right patients to the provider who has room.

    The move
Track every new patient back to the provider, procedure, and campaign that brought them in. Now your marketing can do more than generate demand—it can help fill the schedule where you actually have capacity. That’s how you put your edge over a solo office to work: spare capacity sitting empty doesn’t help you, but spare capacity aimed at implant and ortho campaigns does.

    You can do so through:

    • Making your practice management system the source of truth, so you can see what each campaign actually produced
    • Recording and scoring inbound calls to count the callers who never landed on a schedule
    • Giving every campaign a clear target before it spends a dollar—one provider’s schedule and the procedures you need to fill

    Book a Practice Growth Call

  • Two or More Locations

    Who you’re actually competing with:

Operators who treat the Northwest as one system.

Willamette Dental runs nearly 50 offices in three states from Hillsboro, while Advantage Dental+ manages more than 50 Oregon offices from Bend and insures over 465,000 Oregon Health Plan members. Gentle Dental also lists offices in some 29 Oregon cities. And the national buyers have started moving in, too—GPS Dental, out of Jonesboro, Arkansas, picked up six Portland-area Timber Dental offices in January 2025, bringing its national count to 115.

At the same time, the market is far from locked up. Oregon recorded just two reported DSO deals in all of 2025, and DSO affiliation stood at 13% in 2024 against 16.1% nationally. Most of the offices you’d want next are still independently owned.

    The challenge

Your problem is comparability. A county that has lost roughly 20,000 people since 2020 leaves two offices fighting for growth in the same stagnant draw area, and Google will happily rank them against each other in the same map pack without telling you.

Then add different practice management systems and definitions at each office, and you can’t make a clean comparison between St. Johns and Gresham offices. The budget ends up divided by habit instead of by what’s actually happening.

    The move
Give every location the same scoreboard. Track new patients and production the same way, from the same system, across every office. Then use the advantage your size gives you. You can move money between locations when the numbers call for it—not wait for an annual plan to change. Full offices stop getting fed. Open chairs do.

    You can do so through:

    • Using one measurement stack across every location, so a new patient means the same thing in every office
    • A dedicated Google Business Profile and service-page set per office, each tied to its own draw area, so your locations stop competing for the same map searches
    • Making a quarterly budget meeting about moving money to the office with open capacity

Things You Should Ask Before Hiring a Dental Marketing Agency

  • Have you actually done this before for someone like me?

Probably. We’ve worked with over 4657 dental practices throughout the United States, from solo offices to multi-location groups. But push us on it. A win at a twelve-location group tells you nothing if you run one office with two dentists.

  • Can you actually track my ROI, or is it another report full of impressions?

Yes. We track what you spend and how much it adds to your practice growth, your new patient count, and your production. We connect to your practice management software, so you’re looking at real patients and real dollars instead of clicks.

  • How much does this cost?

Marketing plans start as low as $1,500 a month. But that’s like a patient asking what their treatment will cost before you’ve looked in their mouth. One needs a cleaning. One needs full-arch implants. You’d never quote those the same, and neither would we.

Your number depends on your competition, your practice goals, and your marketing budget. We’ll give you a real one once we’ve looked at your market.

  • How fast will I start seeing results?
Paid ads move the needle first, taking about 2-3 months to start generating results. SEO and AI visibility take about 6-12 months, because it’s more of a long game and anyone who gives you a date for organic results is guessing. On the call we’ll tell you which levers move fastest in your market and which ones take patience.
  • What happens after I sign? Do you disappear?
You get a strategist who knows your practice by name. Every quarter you go through your numbers together, they bring one specific thing to change, and budget moves toward whatever actually produced patients.
  • Does Oregon have rules about how I advertise?
Yes. The Oregon Board of Dentistry’s advertising rule, OAR 818-015-0005, requires ads to be truthful, not misleading, and readily subject to verification, and it bans claims of professional superiority unless you can substantiate them, with the burden of proof on you. It also makes you responsible for advertising that anyone, including an agency, runs on your behalf.

Specialty claims sit under ORS 679.546 and OAR 818-015-0007: you may advertise as a specialist only in a board-recognized specialty, and a general dentist promoting specialty services has to disclose being a general dentist. There is no separate testimonial rule in Oregon; a testimonial has to clear the same verifiable-and-not-misleading bar as every other claim. We draft to those rules; nothing publishes until you’ve read it, and when you and your board disagree with us, you win.

  • Do you need an office in Portland to work with practices here?
As it happens, we’re already here. Portland is WEO Marketly’s home market. And we’ll still tell you what we tell dentists in every other city: an address has never filled a chair. Hold us to the test you’d apply to an agency calling from three time zones away, whether the research is real and whether the numbers move. The zip code is a coincidence, not a credential.

We're Not Trying to Be Your Next Agency

Just your last one.
Why blending in online is your most
expensive marketing problem

When a patient is choosing a dentist, they’re not just Googling. They’re researching. Scanning your website, watching your videos, looking at your photos, reading your reviews, asking ChatGPT, and forming a gut opinion about whether your practice feels like the right fit. That entire judgment happens before they ever call you.

And if every touchpoint looks like it was pulled from the same dental marketing template—generic headshots, stock imagery, a homepage that could belong to any practice in any city—patients feel no reason to choose you over the dentist two blocks away.

What "blending in" actually costs you
  • Patients visit your online platforms and leave without a reason to reach out
  • Your marketing spend drives traffic that doesn’t convert
  • Competitors win more patients because their presence feels more credible
What we build instead

We start by understanding your market, your ideal patients, and the gap between how you currently show up online and how you should. From there, we build the brand positioning and visual identity that makes your practice instantly recognizable and unmistakably different.

Every asset we create—your website, your videos, your photography—is strategically crafted to make patients feel, within seconds of finding you, that you’re the obvious choice in their market. We’ll also help you schedule and post it seamlessly across your platforms, keeping your practice visible and top-of-mind for potential patients.

  • Custom Dental Website Design: Conversion-focused, built for both dental SEO and user experience
  • Video Marketing: 6 months of content in 1.5 days; patient stories, doctor introductions, and practice walkthroughs that build trust before the first visit
  • Professional Photography: Real team, real space, real reasons to choose you over the stock-photo practice down the street

Whether you’re a single-location dental practice or a growing DSO, your brand identity and digital footprint make your first impression, your credibility signal, and your competitive edge. We make sure it’s working hard in your favor.

What it takes to become the dentist
your entire market already knows

There’s a reason some dental practices seem to be everywhere, and it’s not luck or a better product. It’s omnipresence. And it’s the single biggest differentiator between the dental practice patients can’t stop seeing and the one they’ve never heard of.

Here’s the reality of how patients choose a dentist today: they don’t make a decision the first time they see you. They Google “dentist near me,” scroll past your listing, see your ad on Instagram three days later, watch a short video you posted on YouTube, check your Google reviews, and then book—because you’ve shown up consistently enough to feel familiar and trustworthy.

That journey requires you to be present across every channel, every platform, every search surface your patients use. Most dental marketing services focus on one or two channels and call it a strategy. That’s not a strategy—that’s a gap your competitors are filling.

What omnipresence looks like for a dental practice:
  • Ranking on the first page of Google for the searches your ideal patients are making
  • Showing up in Google’s local map pack when patients search for a dentist near them
  • Showing up consistently on social media with content that builds familiarity and trust
  • Getting cited by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews when patients ask AI which dentist to choose
  • Running targeted Google Ads and dental PPC campaigns that put you in front of high-intent patients
  • Maintaining a reputation that makes choosing you feel like the obvious, risk-free decision
How we build it:

Our dental SEO services are built on 25+ years of exclusive dental industry experience—making WEO Marketly one of the most trusted dental SEO companies in the country. We optimize your website, content, and local presence for the search terms your patients are actually using, from everyday dental questions to high-intent local searches used by patients ready to schedule.

But ranking on Google is no longer enough. 60% of Google searches now end without a click. Patients are increasingly skipping search engines entirely and asking AI for recommendations instead. Our AI SEO—built on answer engine optimization (AEO)—makes sure your practice gets cited when patients ask ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overviews which dentist to choose. It’s a layer of digital marketing for dentists that most dental marketing agencies haven’t even begun to build. We have.

Our social media marketing for dentists keeps your practice visible and top-of-mind between appointments, with consistent, engaging content across different social media platforms to build the kind of familiarity that turns a stranger into a scheduled patient. Combined with targeted lead generation and dental PPC campaigns, we make sure your practice isn’t just found—it’s chosen.

And once patients find you, your reputation closes the deal. Our dental reputation management service actively builds and protects your patient reviews across Google and beyond, because in a market where patients are comparing 3–5 practices before booking, your star rating and review volume are part of your marketing strategy, whether you treat them that way or not.

Services included
  • Dental SEO: local SEO for dentists, search engine optimization, keyword rankings, Google Business Profile
  • AI SEO (Answer Engine Optimization): AI visibility, ChatGPT visibility, generative search, AI search presence
  • Social Media Marketing: Organic content and social media ads built for patient engagement
  • Lead Generation + PPC: Google Ads, dental PPC, dental advertising campaigns targeting high-intent patients
  • Dental Reputation Management: Patient reviews, review generation, Google Business Profile optimization

Omnipresence is about being everywhere your patients already are, consistently enough that by the time they’re ready to choose, you’re not just an option. You’re the obvious one.

The question your current agency can't answer—
and why that's costing you, patients

Ask your current dental marketing agency this: “Which specific campaign drove my last 20 new patients—and how much revenue did they generate?”

If the answer isn’t immediately clear with actual patient data, you’re inside the dental marketing black box. It’s the single most common frustration we hear from growth-focused dental groups who’ve cycled through multiple agencies: plenty of activity, plenty of reports, zero clarity on what’s actually working.

Here’s why it happens: most dental marketing reporting tracks marketing metrics—clicks, cost per lead, form submissions. These numbers are easy to report but completely disconnected from the only metric that actually matters to a dental practice, patient revenue.

This is where the black box ends.

WEO Marketly’s ROI tracking system integrates directly with your Practice Management Software—connecting your marketing activity to your actual appointment and production data. For the first time, you see the complete picture, which campaigns drove new patients, what procedures they booked, how much production revenue each marketing channel generated, and exactly where your next marketing dollar should go.

Our call scoring service adds another critical layer. Every inbound call gets tracked and scored, so you know which campaigns are generating calls, how many are converting to booked appointments, and where patients are slipping through before they ever walk through your door. For most practices, this alone uncovers a patient acquisition gap they didn’t know existed.

What you see in your WEO Marketly dashboard
  • New patients acquired by the marketing channel and campaign
  • Production revenue generated per channel
  • Total ROI on marketing investment, updated in real time
  • Call tracking, conversion rates, and appointment booking analysis
  • Cost per new patient by source
Services included
  • ROI Tracking (PMS Integrated): Full-funnel dental marketing performance tied directly to patient revenue, not vanity metrics
  • Call Scoring: Call tracking for dental practices, inbound call analysis, appointment conversion insights

This is what separates a dental marketing agency from a dental marketing partner—a real answer to the question every dental practice owner deserves: “Is my marketing actually working?”

What separates a dental marketing vendor
from a true growth partner

Most dental marketing relationships feel transactional. Campaigns go live, reports get sent, retainers get renewed, and nobody’s asking whether any of it is actually growing your practice. Month after month, the same activities run on autopilot while your growth plateaus and your budget quietly drains.

We see what's working. We scale it. We cut what's not.

Once your Omni-Dentist Growth System is running, your dedicated strategist reviews your complete dental marketing performance dashboard every single month—patients acquired, production revenue generated, cost per new patient by channel, and ROI on total marketing investment. Every decision we make is driven by one question: what’s actually moving the needle for your practice?

If a dental SEO campaign is producing high-value patients, we scale it. If a paid dental advertising campaign isn’t converting at the level it should, we fix it or cut it, and reallocate your budget toward what is. Nothing runs on autopilot.

Your biggest growth lever might already be in your database.

Most agencies only chase new patients. But the highest-ROI growth opportunity is often already sitting in your existing patient records—lapsed patients, missed recalls, and treatment plans that were started but never completed. Production revenue waiting to be reactivated.

Our dental patient reactivation service identifies these opportunities and re-engages them with targeted email and SMS campaigns—turning the patients you’ve already won into booked appointments. Because the cheapest patient to book is the one who’s already chosen you once.

Built for growth-focused dental groups that are serious about scaling

Whether you’re expanding from one location to multiple, managing a multi-location dental group, or building toward a dental service organization, your marketing strategy needs to evolve with your practice. That requires a partner who knows your numbers, understands your market, and shows up every month with a proactive plan—not a reactive report.

What a strategic partnership looks like every month:
  • Full review of your ROI dashboard, new patients, revenue per channel, and cost per patient acquisition
  • Identification of your single biggest growth constraint with a specific recommendation
  • Ongoing optimization of dental SEO, dental PPC, social media marketing, and content strategy
  • Patient reactivation campaigns that surface lapsed patients and unfinished treatment plans
  • Proactive budget reallocation based on live performance data
  • Long-term growth planning for multi-location dental practices and DSOs

WEO Marketly has served 4,175+ dental practices since 1999, maintaining an 89.1% client retention rate, because we deliver the kind of dental marketing results that make leaving pointless.

Service included:
  • Strategic Partnership: Dedicated dental marketing strategist, monthly performance reviews, and proactive growth planning for single-location practices, multi-location dental groups, and dental service organizations
  • Patient Reactivation: Targeted email and SMS campaigns that re-engage lapsed patients, missed recall appointments, and unfinished treatment plans—turning your existing database into booked appointments

Growth is something that we build together—deliberately, accountably, every single month.
